Avoid Costly RV Repairs with Proper Winterization from Wiers

As summer ends, it’s time to think about winterizing your RV to protect it from harsh weather conditions. Winterization isn’t just about parking your RV until spring—it’s a critical process to safeguard your vehicle’s systems from freezing and cracking. One of the most important tasks is removing water from the plumbing system to prevent pipes from freezing and breaking. Proper winterization protects your water systems and other components from freezing temperatures, helping you avoid costly repairs when it’s time to hit the road again.

When temperatures drop, the water in your RV’s plumbing system can freeze, expand, and cause significant damage. To prevent this, there are a few steps that should be taken to ensure your RV stays in top condition during the winter.

DIY Checklist for RV Winterization:

  • Drain the water heater: The water heater tank needs to be drained to prevent residual water from freezing and causing damage.
  • Bypass the water heater: Use a bypass kit to direct antifreeze around the water heater. This ensures that the heater doesn’t fill up with antifreeze, saving you money and effort.
  • Drain fresh and wastewater tanks: Emptying all holding tanks, including freshwater, gray water, and black water, is crucial to prevent freezing and the risk of damaging the tanks or plumbing lines.
  • Add antifreeze: Pour RV-specific antifreeze into the plumbing system to prevent any remaining water from freezing in pipes, lines, and tanks.
  • Cover the RV: Use a breathable cover to protect your RV from snow, ice, and moisture buildup while still allowing airflow to prevent mildew.
  • Seal windows and doors: Inspect and seal all windows and doors to prevent cold air from seeping in and to avoid condensation.
  • Check roof seals: Inspect the roof for cracks or voids and use a self-leveling seal to cover any found. If your RV is stored outside keep heavy snow off the roof as this could cause roof damage.
  • Remove valuables and food: Clear out all perishables and valuables to avoid attracting pests during the storage months.
  • Add fuel stabilizer: This helps protect the engine from ethanol damage and prevents fuel from degrading over the winter months.
  • Deep clean tanks: Thoroughly clean both the black and gray tanks before starting the winterization process. This will help maintain hygiene and reduce odors.
  • Rodent stop: Ensure all access points inside the RV are foamed or blocked to keep rodents out or use deterrents to keep them out.
