The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced that the International Roadcheck will take place from May 16th to May 18th, 2023. This annual event is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles, and it aims to increase safety on our roads by conducting thorough inspections on commercial vehicles and their drivers.

CVSA International Roadcheck May 16-18, 2023

The International Roadcheck is a 72-hour event that takes place across North America May 16-18. During this time, law enforcement officers and inspectors will conduct inspections on commercial vehicles at various locations, including weigh stations, inspection sites, and roving patrols. The inspections will be conducted on all types of commercial vehicles, including buses, trucks, and trailers.

The main objective of the International Roadcheck is to ensure that commercial vehicles are operating safely and in compliance with federal and state regulations. The inspections cover a variety of areas, including driver qualifications, vehicle maintenance, cargo securement, and hours of service compliance. During the inspection, the inspector will also check the driver’s logbook and other required documents to ensure that the driver follows all regulations.

This year, inspectors will focus on anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and cargo securement to highlight the importance of those aspects of vehicle safety. Although ABS violations are not out-of-service violations, ABS plays a critical role in reducing the risk of collisions by preventing the wheels from locking up or skidding, allowing a driver to maintain control of the vehicle while braking. Cargo securement is another important aspect of the International Roadcheck. Inspectors will be checking to make sure that the cargo is properly secured and that the weight of the cargo does not exceed the maximum weight limits for the vehicle. Proper cargo securement is critical to ensure that the cargo does not shift during transport, which can lead to accidents.

Another area of focus during the International Roadcheck is vehicle maintenance. Inspectors will be checking the condition of brakes, tires, lights, and other critical components of commercial vehicles to ensure that they are in proper working order. If any defects are found, the vehicle will be placed out of service until the necessary repairs are made.

During the International Roadcheck, drivers and carriers can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence on the roads. This can include more patrols, checkpoints, and roadside inspections. Drivers should be prepared to provide all necessary documentation and make sure their vehicle is prepared with an updated DOT.
